The Ending Violence Everywhere Coalition was pleased to see Chief Brandon Clabes receive the Clara Luper Family’s Community Service Award for 2017. The Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration began very early in Midwest City starting with the annual Dr. MLK Prayer breakfast. Chief Clabes was recognized by the Dr. MLK Prayer Breakfast Committee for his 38 years of dedication and service to the Midwest City Community, his ethical (accountable) and moral (transparent) leadership as police chief, but more specifically for his progressive approach to community policing. In the last few years the Midwest City Police Department has been working with the numerous community organizations, churches, public officials, and first responders to connect with the community in order of bridging existing gaps. The message of inclusion, integrity, service, and respect was shared as the Chief and his officer’s went door to door with Councilwoman Christine Allen-Price, City Manager Guy Henson, Mayor Dukes, Sara Bana, Milton Combs, Reverend Theodis Manning, Garland Pruitt, and first responders. The chief wanted the residents of Midwest City to know they are interested in keeping the community united and safe.
Chief Clabes is also a stakeholder representing the Midwest City Police Department with the Police and Community Trust Initiative (PACT). His and other police departments are working together with community leaders to build trust between law enforcement and the public. EVE admires his effort and sincerity. In his remarks he humbly thanked EVE, his city leaders, his officers, Garland Pruitt, and Milton Combs for supporting this effort.
At a time of national unrest and tension between minorities and law enforcement, this is indeed a recognition to be admired and noted. We thank Chief Clabes and the entire Midwest City Police Department for being a beacon of hope in times of darkness and fear. We also humbly thank the families of all of our heroic first responders for their daily sacrifices for our security.
